Alt text is the most commonly skipped field in ecommerce. It is invisible to most shoppers, it is never required to publish a product, and it has to be written one image at a time in a modal. So it does not get written — and a store with 2,000 products quietly ships 6,000 images with no alt text at all.
That is two problems at once. Screen reader users get "image" where a product description should be, and Google Images — a genuine traffic source for anything visual — has nothing to index.
What alt text is worth
- Accessibility. Alt text is how a screen reader describes your product. Missing alt text is a product a blind shopper cannot evaluate, and it is a standard finding in any accessibility audit.
- Image search. Google Images sends real traffic to apparel, homeware, furniture and anything else bought with the eyes. Alt text is the main signal for what an image shows.
- Page SEO. Alt text is part of the page's content signals — not a ranking silver bullet, but a consistent contributor.
- Broken images. When an image fails to load, the alt text is what the customer sees instead.
Why this is a spreadsheet job
Alt text is highly repetitive. Most of it is the same sentence with two or three variables swapped — product name, colour, angle. That is a formula, not 6,000 acts of writing.
SheetSync exports one row per image, with the product title, variant, image position and the current alt text. Then:
Generate a sensible baseline
Something like =B2 & " – " & C2 & ", " & D2 turns product title, colour and shot type into "Wool throw – charcoal, folded detail" across every row at once. It is not poetry, but it is accurate, specific and infinitely better than nothing.
Vary by position
Position 1 is the hero shot, later positions are detail or lifestyle. =IF(E2=1, B2 & " – front view", B2 & " – detail view " & E2) gives each image a distinct description instead of repeating one string, which is what you want both for search and for a screen reader reading a gallery.
Find the gaps
Filter the alt text column to blanks and you have an exact list of what is missing — a number you can report and a backlog you can clear.
Fix a rename
Rebranded a product line? Find and replace the old name across every alt text in one action.
Hand-write the ones that matter
Generate the baseline for the long tail, then write by hand for your top 50 products. Those are the pages worth the attention, and now they are the only ones needing it.
Step by step
- Open Product Info Sync in SheetSync and include image alt text in the exported fields.
- Export. Every product image arrives as a row with its current alt text.
- Fill the blanks with formulas, then refine your priority products by hand.
- Paste formula results as values in the alt text column.
- Sync back to Shopify and check the log.
- Open a product in admin and confirm the alt text landed on the right images.
How to write alt text that earns its place
- Describe the image, not the product listing. "Charcoal wool throw folded on a bench" beats "Buy wool throw free shipping".
- Keep it under about 125 characters. Screen readers get unwieldy past that and the extra words add nothing.
- Do not start with "image of" or "photo of". Screen readers already announce it as an image.
- Do not keyword stuff. Repeating your target phrase in all nine images is a pattern search engines discount and screen reader users find exhausting.
- Include the colour or variant when images differ by variant. It is the single most useful distinguishing detail.
- Leave purely decorative images empty. An empty alt attribute tells assistive technology to skip it, which is correct for a spacer or a background flourish.
Keeping it from regressing
New products arrive with empty alt text by default, so a one-off cleanup decays. Re-export monthly, filter to blanks, run your formula over the new rows, and sync. With automatic syncing enabled the whole routine is a few minutes a month rather than another full-catalog project a year from now.
Fix every missing alt tag at once
Export your product images to Google Sheets, write alt text in bulk, and sync it to Shopify.
